Ginsu 14 Pc. Bakelite Cutlery Set
Ginsu’s
International Traditions 14 pc Bakelite cutlery set is designed for the home
cook who is not used to to the maintenance required of a more high-end
knife. This set supplies a kitchen with the majority of its cutlery
requirements, and packs all knives in a modern hardwood storage block. Ginsu
blades are made from stainless steel and feature a two-dimensional serrated
blade that is symmetrically cut on either side for more precise slicing and
for either right- or left-handed use.
These
commercial quality knives feature riveted construction for strength, balance
and style. The set includes a 3.5-inch paring knife, 4.5-inch utility knife,
5-inch boning knife, 8-inch bread knife, 8-inch slicer, 8-inch chef’s knife,
six 4.5-inch steak knives, kitchen shears, and the knife block.
A
Belgian-born American living in New York State discovered Bakelite: a
chemist named Leo Hendrik Baekeland, who was looking for an insulating
shellac to cover wires in electric motors and generators. He mixed phenol
and formaldehyde, and found that the resulting material could be further
blended with wood flour, asbestos, or slate dust to create “composite”
materials with different properties. He named the material Bakelite.
Guidelines for Caring for Your Ginsu Knives
Your cutlery set can last a lifetime if
you follow these guidelines:
-
Never put your knives
in the dishwasher – hand wash with a mild detergent and dry them by
hand.
-
Always use a cutting
board.
-
Learn how to use
honing steel properly, and use it often to maintain the edges of your
knives.
-
Have your knives
professionally sharpened.
-
Use a wood block to
store your knives; don’t keep them in a drawer with a lot of other metal
objects.
